South Lyon High School senior Mallory Heaney is the 2010 recipient of a $3,000 Live Like Andi Foundation scholarship. Mike O'Connell, Foundation Director, recently presented Mallory with a check, which she will use as she pursues her college plans this fall.
Since our inception, The Live Like Andi Foundation has awarded scholarships at high schools in South Lyon, Michigan, Novi, Michigan, and Richmond, Indiana, the hometown of Andrea O'Connell, who is the inspiration for the foundation and its work. Andrea was diagnosed with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma at age 19, and after a 21 year battle with this rare cancer, died in July 2007. Scholarship winners are selected based on their own efforts to face and overcome significant challenges in their lives, in a manner like Andi, who had an amazing spirit. Mallory Heaney, the 2010 recipient, along with Amanda Thomas, the 2009 recipient, have shown positive attitudes in embracing life, and all that is ahead in their exciting futures.
From 2007 to 2011, the Live Like Andi Foundation (LLA) has raised approximately $375,000 for ACC research and support, with the main fundraiser being the annual LLA Run held in Novi each spring, which the community has overwhelmingly supported. Donations to the LLA Foundation are currently helping to fund a promising clinical trial drug at the Karmanos Cancer Institute. Andi's husband, Mike, and their children Tyler, Gabrielle, and Olivia are grateful for the many years of support, and the opportunity to give back.
